Before choosing a patio finish, plan the furniture

A finish sample is easier to assess after you know how the outdoor space will work.

Leave room for people as well as furniture

Use your own furniture dimensions and door swing. The sketch explains relationships; it does not prescribe a construction layout or minimum clearance.

Start with the use of the space

Mark an approximate table and chair footprint with removable household markers. Account for chairs being pulled out and people passing behind them. Check the door swing and the route to the yard. This exercise clarifies the brief; it does not establish final construction dimensions.

List the other project pieces

A cover, lighting, cooking equipment and planting beds can affect layout. Write these items separately and ask which trades or approvals they involve. If the concrete is only one phase, tell the installer what may come later before the design is finalized.

Bring a small set of finish questions

Ask for a sample, a description of surface texture and maintenance instructions. Compare how the surface will be used when wet, shaded or exposed to sun. For the full installation conversation, use the patio service guide and estimate checklist.
